Sweet, tangy and tart, this Christmas cranberry sauce recipe is the perfect addition to any holiday menu. I personally love how tangy and refreshing it is and love to serve it along side ham, macaroni and cheese and roasted veggies. It only takes a short time to make and is a healthy replacement to canned options that the whole family will love.

What is Cranberry Sauce Made of?
For this Christmas cranberry sauce recipe, you only need a few simple ingredients. The first and most important ingredient is organic cranberries, fresh or frozen. I have used both in this recipe and can’t tell a difference. You will also need spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg, salt, vanilla extract, and honey or maple syrup. Lastly, and the best ingredient, is orange juice. Orange juice helps to cut the tartness of the cranberries and adds a depth of flavor that is so perfect for Christmas time.
Is Cranberry Sauce Healthy?
This Christmas cranberry sauce recipe is healthy! Fresh or frozen organic cranberries contain many nutrients. They are high in vitamin C and antioxidants. Both nutrients are great for your immune system and overall health. Cranberries also contain probiotics and compounds that help to fight bacteria, making them great to consume for urinary tract health. Adding organic orange juice adds more vitamin C and antioxidants to this Christmas cranberry sauce recipe. Nutrient-dense sweeteners like honey or maple syrup make this recipe a very healthy option. Not all cranberry sauces are equally as healthy though. Many name-brand jellied cranberry sauces contain harmful added ingredients like high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is a GMO product that is linked to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

How to Make Cranberry Sauce
This Christmas cranberry sauce recipe is one of the easiest things you can make during the holidays. Simply combine the cranberries, orange juice, and maple syrup in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Once the cranberries start to pop bring them to simmer for 15-20 minutes or until all of the cranberries have popped the mixture starts to thicken. Next add the spices, 1/4 a teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon, and a dash of nutmeg. At this point, you could also add in a special ingredient: 1 tablespoon of stone-ground mustard. The mustard is totally optional but does help with the bitterness of the cranberries and adds a little savory flavor, making for a delicious addition. Lastly, remove the cranberry sauce from the heat and place it in a glass container, allow it to cool on the counter or in the fridge until you are ready to serve it. The sauce will thicken up over time and is great all on its own or served next to ham, chicken, or turkey.
Can Kids Enjoy Cranberry Sauce?
Yes! My toddler loves this Christmas cranberry sauce recipe, I literally have to stop him from eating it all. Cranberry sauce can be very tangy and tart though but different flavors are so important for kids to try. These flavors can help to develop their palate and also bring extra vitamins and nutrients to their diet.
